Erosion is the Number 1 source of pollution to Maine’s surface waters. One of the most serious threats is phosphorus, a natural fertilizer which becomes attached to soil particles and is carried into lakes and other water bodies by runoff. Excess phosphorus within the lake will cause detrimental algal blooms, which cover the lake with a smelly scum and negatively impact water quality. Erosion control is the key to protecting our lakes. Controlling erosion also saves money by reducing the maintenance costs of roads, driveways and landscaped areas.
