LakeSmart is a free statewide program that teaches best management practices for lake-friendly properties. Lake-friendly properties are those that find a balance between meeting landowner needs and maintaining the best conditions possible for the lake.
Responsible management practices, such as reducing stormwater runoff into the lake, can decrease phosphorous loading and the potential for algae blooms. Evaluations are free, and properties that are particularly lake-friendly receive an award along with a sign to display on the shoreline and/or driveway.
This year we conducted 56 LakeSmart evaluations!
Thank you to everyone listed below for helping to protect the water quality of our lakes and ponds for generations to come.

Since 2016, we’ve evaluated 294 properties on 25 area lakes and ponds and given 139 LakeSmart Awards.
While these numbers are exciting, evaluations are just the start – the real goal is to make positive improvements on your property. Visit mainelakes.org/resources for resources on lake-friendly property improvements and best practices.
For those looking for technical assistance, LEA also offers Clean Lake Check-Ups to members. This might be a good option if you have questions or concerns about specific issues such as gravel road maintenance, shoreline stabilization, tree removal, or replanting plans.
Email Emlyn at emlyn@mainelakes.org to schedule a LakeSmart evaluation or Clean Lake Check Up.
