Landscaping for Lake Protection

WHEN: Tuesday July 21, 2026 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

WHERE: Maine Lake Science Center, 51 Willett Rd, Bridgton

Join us for a workshop focused on native plant landscaping practices to protect our lakes. You can have a beautiful shorefront while effectively managing stormwater and helping keep the watershed healthy. We will discuss native plantings and landscaping practices that promote biodiversity, protect water quality, and promote wildlife habitat. This training will be co-led by local horticulturalist Corey Kotfila and LEA land use coordinator Emlyn Emerock.

Corey Kotfila is an ecologically-minded horticulturist living and working in Western and Mid-Coast Maine. He owns Blue Flag Native Buffers, LLC—a native garden design business specializing in erosion control planting. Corey works closely with homeowners to develop shoreland re-vegetation projects that fortify shorelines and protect lake health, whilst providing for our local ecologies. Native shrubs, forbs, and grasses are crucial to shoreland restoration work, and Corey appreciates any opportunity to share his knowledge of their utility and diversity—whether through educational lectures, hands-on workshops, or collaborative programs. Corey also serves as the Horticulturist for the non-profit McLaughlin Garden and has stewarded the historic landscape and collection of flora since 2021.

Left to right: Aster, cardinal flower, and bearberry.
